Organization of Program

Outpatient Clinics

  • General Genetics Clinic: This clinic meets Wednesday afternoons from 1-5 at 221 Longwood Avenue, 2nd floor clinic space. Individuals are referred for diagnostic evaluations, testing, genetic counseling and treatment. Fellows will meet with patients to gather medical and family history, perform the initial physical examination then confer with the attending physician to discuss impression and plan. Fellows may also observe sessions with the genetic counselor, with the possibility of participating when appropriate. The clinic is staffed by Peter Tishler, M.D and Michael Murray, M.D.

  • Center for Fetal Medicine and Prenatal Genetics: Patients are seen on a daily basis for risk assessment, discussion of testing options for at-risk pregnancies, and/or genetic counseling surrounding abnormalities detected during prenatal diagnostic testing. Fellows will attend the CFM, which is located the 3rd Floor of CWN on Tuesdays from 1-5 under the supervision of Dr. Louise Wilkins-Haug. Fellows will observe diagnostic procedures as well as sessions with the perinatologists, medical geneticists, or genetic counselors, with the possibility of participation in patient visits when appropriate.

  • GI Clinic: Individuals with, or at risk for, hereditary colon cancer are evaluated, assessed for genetic risk and offered genetic testing where applicable. Genetic counseling and support services are provided for individuals and families going through the genetic testing process. Fellows will attend this clinic on Friday afternoons from 12-4 on Dana 11 under the supervision of Dr. Sapna Syngal. Fellows will observe sessions with gastroenterologists, oncologists and genetic counselors with the possibility of participation in patient visits when applicable. Sessions alternate with breast/ovarian cancer clinic.

  • Breast and Ovarian Cancer Clinic: This clinic offers risk assessment and genetic counseling and testing for individuals at risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancers and for individuals going through the genetic testing process. Fellows will attend the Breast Cancer Clinic at the Dana Farber on Friday afternoons from 1-5 pm on Dana 9 under the supervision of Dr. Judy Garber and colleagues. Fellows will observe sessions with the oncologists and genetic counselors and participate in patient visits when appropriate. Sessions alternate with Colon Cancer Clinic.
Inpatient Service
  • Genetics Consultation Service: The inpatient consultation service will provide diagnostic evaluations, risk assessment and genetic counseling for adults who are inpatients at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Consultations on newborns at Brigham and Women's Hospital will be performed as part of the Children's Hospital Inpatient Consultation service.

The genetics inpatient service will be staffed, Monday morning through Friday afternoon (including nights), by the fellow on the "BWH rotation" and an attending physician determined by a rotating schedule. Weekend call, from Friday evening through Monday morning, will be covered by the first and second year fellows and an attending physician on rotating schedules that include both MGH and BWH staff.

A single Brigham and Women's beeper will be used for the fellows covering the consultation service (this is in addition to each fellows' individuals beeper). The inpatient beeper will be passed from off service to on service fellow as the weekly and weekend schedules change. A cellular phone will be made available to the fellow for night and weekend calls pertaining to the inpatients consultation service. Attendings will maintain individual beepers through their home institutions.

Fellows on the inpatient service will be expected to respond to requests for consultations by gathering medical and family history, performing the physical examination and formulating the initial assessment and plan. Attending physicians will staff the inpatient consults and provide further input. The inpatient team will round as needed to complete new consults and offer additional guidance to house staff for patients previously seen.
