Didactic Requirements

The core training in basic human and medical genetics is provided to all residents and fellows, regardless of their homesite or area of training. The major teaching occurs in the Advanced Human Genetics course, which runs in the Fall and Spring semesters each year. This is required for all fellows during the entire term of their training. Attendance is also required at the monthly Department of Genetics Clinical Seminar. Finally, residents attend lectures in the Genetics, Embryology and Reproduction course at Harvard Medical School.

  1. Advanced Human Genetics: This class meets on Tuesdays from 5:00 - 6:00pm in the HIM Seminar Room 101, except for one semester (the last in a three year cycle, see below) which meets twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 - 6:00pm. Topics change each semester on a three year cycle, as follows:

    • Cytogenetics: general principles of chromosome structure and analysis, and major clinical disorders associated with chromosome abnormalities
    • Biochemical Genetics - major metabolic pathways and associated disorders
    • Molecular Genetics - principles of molecular genetics and mechanisms of genetic disease
    • Medical Genetics - general approach to major classes of genetic disease
    • Quantitative Genetics - population genetics, risk assessment, Bayesian analysis
    • Review Course - a general review of human and medical genetics provided during the last six months before the American Board of Medical Genetics examination

  2. Clinical Genetics Conference: This is a weekly conference held Wednesdays from 10:00 - 11:00am. Trainees present clinical cases to faculty on a rotating basis. Trainees from all areas participate in the rotation schedule.

  3. Department of Genetics Clinical Seminar: This seminar meets once per month on Friday, 8:30 - 9:30am. A clinical case is presented by one of the residents, and then is discussed by an invited speaker. This conference is attended by clinical faculty from all the participating hospitals, and by research faculty from the Department of Genetics.

  4. Genetics, Developmental, and Reproductive Biology Course: This is the medical school course provided to all first year Harvard Medical students. The course is given for six weeks in March and April. Residents are expected to attend the lectures during their second year.
