Clinical Genetics
Residency
- The Harvard Medical
School Genetics Training Program offers a two year residency. Trainees
must complete two years of graduate
medical education in an ACGME accredited program before beginning the
genetics residency. If you are unsure whether your residency program
is accredited by the ACGME, please contact the American Board of Medical
Genetics (ABMG) at http://www.abmg.org.
- Foreign medical
graduates must obtain an ECFMG certificate before applying to the program.
For more information about the ECFMG process please refer to their website
http://www.ecfmg.org.
- Completion of the
training program is not sufficient to be eligible to sit for the ABMG
examination in Clinical Genetics. The ABMG requires all trainees to
possess a valid full medical license at the time of the examination.
Please note that "full" medical licenses are different from
"limited" medical licenses, which are issued for training
purposes. A complete list of eligibility criteria is available on the
ABMG website.
- A major source
of funding for trainees is through the NIH. Applicants who are not US
citizens or do not have permanent residency status in the United States
may be considered if they can provide adequate funding
from an institution in their home country.
Clinical Laboratory
Fellowships (includes Clinical Biochemical Genetics, Clinical Cytogenetics,
Clinical Molecular Genetics, and Ph.D. Medical Genetics)
- Trainees must identify a research mentor and source of funding before
an application to biochemical genetics, clinical molecular genetics
or clinical cytogenetics will be considered. There is no specific funding
available for clinical laboratory fellows.
- Trainees must be eligible to sit for the ABMG examination in the clinical
laboratory specialty to which they are applying upon completion of the
program. A complete list of eligibility criteria is available on the
ABMG website at http://www.abmg.org/genetics/abmg/cert-2002/2k-cert-02.htm.
- Trainees who have received doctoral degrees outside the US, Puerto
Rico or Canada must comply with additional requirements, which are outlined
at http://www.abmg.org/genetics/abmg/cert-2002/2k-cert-13.htm.
Please note: Trainees who hold an M.D. or equivalent from a foreign
country must have either a standard certificate from the ECFMG or have
passed the Test of Spoken English (TSE).
