CLINICAL
PGY 1
The PGY I program is designed to provide residents with the medical experiences and skills that are most relevant to psychiatric practice. Residents spend six months on medical services along with PGY I residents in other programs. Most residents will do these rotations at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, at Carney Hospital, an affiliated community hospital in Boston, or at Brigham & Womens Hospital in Boston.
Residents spend two months on a rotation in substance abuse at the Faulkner Hospital, where they learn about detoxification, intensive inpatient treatment, and long-term outpatient management of these problems. As part of this program, they are also exposed to self-help groups.
Residents spend two months rotating at Beth Israel Deaconess Medial Center where they learn about the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of acutely ill psychiatric patients. One month of this rotation is spent in the Emergency Psychiatric Service and the other on the Deaconess Four Inpatient Psychiatry Service.
